Attended the WISVAN (Wisconsin Vascular Access Network) meeting last night at Fleming’s Steak House in Madison. The Dinner was sponsored by Jenna Mathison at BARD Access System. Thank you Jenna for a great dinner and presentation on your new Midline. Our WI chapter of AVA meets 4 times a year to share and network with other nurses and hospitals in Wisconsin. I enjoy meeting and learning from nurses skilled in VAD insertion, care and maintenance. I shared with the group my experiences in China this past summer. I presented on complications of VAD’s and how to prevent and treat them. Nurses in this country have become the leaders in developing protocols, educating staff and implementing best practices to insure that these devices function correctly and prevent harm for our patients. Taking a team approach, rounding with the health care team and discussing each patients vascular access device on a daily basis is key to the success of these programs.
