Placing Midlines in the ED

Posted on by Mary Smith

Placing a Midline in the Emergency Department is not our first choice for venous access. We are thinking get a PIV in and start treating.  The PIV takes about 5 minutes to place.  Why not be proactive for our patients that we know will be admitted, and nurses in the ED are knowledgeable enough to know who these patients are, and place a midline?  The midline can stay in for approx 10 days.  Most of our patients do not stay that long, but why not consider this option for them.  One line, one stick for them.  The midline takes about 15min to place.  10 more minutes to spend can make a big difference in patient care.   The patient with a diagnosis of CHF, COPD, Dehydration and short term need for antibiotics, that have a ph of 5-9 can benefit greatly with this line.  When looking at patient satisfaction surveys, our patients are fearful of the “IV start”.  So if we have a poor access patient, and they need several restarts of their line, why not place the midline and provide great service for them.  Contact us for more information on this line.
