There has been a lot of discussion on where these devices should be placed. Here is what the 2016 Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice State:
INS 27. SITE SELECTION:
“Select sites in the upper arm, preferred, or secondarily the region of the antecubital fossa, using the basilic, cephalic, median capital, and brachial wins, with the basilic vein preferred. ” (Adults)
“Consider using vascular visualization technologies that aid in vein identification and selection for difficult intravenous access”
INS 33. VASCULAR ACCESS SITE PREPARATION AND DEVICE PLACEMENT:
“Consider the use of maximal sterile barrier precautions with midline catheter insertion”
The Standard states to “consider” max barrier insertion for Midline Catheters. We have been teaching this method of insertion for many years and it is great to see this in the 2016 Standards of Practice discuss this practice. Standardizing our insertion technique with PICC and Midline devices improves our success rate!
