Clinically Indicated

Posted on by Mary Smith

Our Vascular Access Team has been looking at how to implement clinically indicated removal of the PIV vs routinely removing the device at 96 hours.  We first brought the idea to our Nurse Managers and DON.  We wanted to get buy in from the top.  We then brought the evidence to our house wide nurse practice council.  With the support of  administration, the nurse managers and the practice council we introduced the idea at our  All Nurse meeting.  It was well received and we are recruiting nurses form the units to help implement this process.    We ranked in the 64th percentile on the press ganey question of “The skill of the nurse placing the line”.  Our hospital ranks in the 90’s for customer service so we need to make some changes.  We know that the Med-Surg nurse probably has the least opportunity to place PIV’s  and will have even less opportunity to maintain this invasive skill.  We will be looking at creating a step by step protocol for PIV insertion.   Any ideas you have please share with us!  We will continue to share our story and update you in the process
