Nurses who care for CVC’s (Central Venous Catheters) are always asking “how do I identify the connector?” This is a challenge for all of us. If you take care of the patient with the line placed in your facility, then it is easy to know what type of needless connector you have. Simply pull out your policy and procedure and follow that for flushing and locking off the line. It’s the patient that presents from another facility with a PICC line in that we question the proper technique. Because the patient rarely comes in with an identification card that tells you what type of PICC they have, and what type of flush solution you need, simply take off the unfamiliar connector and re-place it with one you have in stock at your facility. Connectors are universal and will fit all lines. We use a Neutral Fluid Displacement Connector. You can flush, remove the syringe then clamp, or you can flush, clamp then remove the syringe. Be sure to vigorously flush after you change out the connector.
