Antimicrobial and Antithrombogenic PICC

PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters) lines are a good choice for the patient needing IV therapy.  We know that the line is indicated for many uses.  The decision to place a PICC line is assessed on an individual basis.   Once the PICC line is in, its the care and maintenance of the line that we need to be doing correctly.  Arrow has introduced a PICC line that helps reduce the risk of PICC-related complications with powerful antimicrobial and antithrombogenic protection for at least 30 days.  How often have we found PICC lines “clotted off” or unable to obtain lab sampling within 24-48 hours of placement?  Both the internal and external surfaces of the Arrow PICC are treated with Chlorag+gard (chlorhexadine) providing a controlled release of the antimicrobial/antithrombogenic agent for at least 30 days.  When we are so diligent on using maximum barrier precautions to decrease CRBSI’s (Catheter related blood stream infections) and needing to prevent catheter occlusion,  this PICC line can be a choice for some of our patients.
