Educating staff on care and maintenance of all VAD’s (Vascular Access Devices) is key to prevention of CRBSI’s (Catheter Related Blood Stream Infections). Educating staff on hire, annually and when ever your products change is the standard in health care. When staff members change jobs, and this skill is added to their job description, documented education needs to be completed. The National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG 07.04.01). Educating the patient and their family members about central line-associated bloodstream infection prevention is important. Patients and family members play an important role on the Vascular Access Team. Having monthly 2 hours classes on what’s new, policy changes and simply having a discussion on who has lines in your facility, what concerns do the nurses have that are caring for that patient. We have been able to maintain a 0% infection rate by implementing this practice.
